A Guide to World Calendars
October 9, 2025
The date on your wall is based on the Gregorian calendar, a solar system used globally. However, for billions of people, today is simultaneously a different date and year, governed by different astronomical systems.
Solar vs. Lunar Systems
The core difference lies in what each calendar measures. The Gregorian calendar is a solar calendar (based on the Earth's orbit around the Sun). In contrast, many cultural calendars are lunar or lunisolar.
- Hijri (Islamic) Calendar: A purely lunar calendar. It is approximately 11 days shorter than the solar year, so its months drift through the seasons.
- Hebrew & Chinese Calendars: Lunisolar systems. They follow the moon for months but add a "leap month" every few years to keep holidays aligned with the solar seasons.
